Hydro Electric power is one of the original methods of generating electricity dating back to the 1880s. The first hydro electric plant was installed near Niagra Falls , NY. Modern hydro electric plants have been built in the Pacific NW, in the desert SW and in Tennesse. You are probably familiar with the Hoover Dam across the Colorado River in Colorado.
Hydro electric plants produce electricity with burning fossil fuels, ther for ether is no CO2 released. The plants will operate as long as the river or stream continues to flow. Larger plants use dam across a river to provide a steady source of water with a large pressure to flow thru the plant. The water turns generator turbines and then the electricity is sold to the electric grid.
Micro Hydro electric plants operate the same way but on a much smaller scale. These small plants use a river or stream but will not have a dam associated with the plant. So, electricity is produced only when the stream is running. Any electricity not used is sold back the electric grid During the dry periods, no electricity is produced..
